Why Trying Harder Wastes Your Time
-- and how it makes the situation worse.

"You are just not working hard enough," he blurted out, as his face filled with color and with piercing eyes. My client was describing the response from her boss when she told him that she was not coping with her work load and the she was feeling stressed about her job.

Unfortunately this is a common response -- not the exact words but the emotion and the idea that working harder is the answer. Let me assure you it is NOT the answer. In fact, I believe trying to work harder is the worst thing you can do in this situation.

Do you know why your boss gets angry when they are told you have too much work? Because they can't change the situation and they have too much work too! They feel helpless, but they wont admit it. This problem is an epidemic.

So what do you do. Acknowledge to yourself that there is TOO MUCH work to get everything done. Now that you know there is too much work you need to Try Easier.

Most people do the opposite. They try harder - yet this is the worst thing you can do. Why?

Feeling Overloaded? -- It's HERE. It's UNIQUE. It's BUILT for the 21st Century. It is ....
A 21st Century Time Management System. Finally a way to deal with the mass of information overload in the world today.

Imagine you are on a business trip to a city you haven't been to before, like Melbourne Australia. You have have a map a friend gave you and you are going to meet your boss outside a client's office. You get to the city and try to find your way, but you get lost.

After an hour of frustration and several conversations with your boss who told you to try harder and that you are not focused, you ask someone for help. They point out that you have a map of Sydney, not Melbourne.

It doesn't matter how hard you try, if your map is the wrong one you will not get to your outcome. Your brain uses maps to think and make decisions. If your brain is using the wrong map/thinking it's like being in Melbourne with a map of Sydney Yet, most people tend to Try Harder when they are getting behind - And this maybe the biggest waste of Your time.

Anytime your hear a little voice in your head OR someone else telling you "You just have to work harder" then STOP. Recognize this is a trap of Poor Time Management. You could waste a lot of time. Take a minute to try easier by checking to see if you have the right map.

When you know you are using the right map, you also need to decide which route to take. There maybe many attractions you want to see along the way, BUT is that the main outcome you want? In today's overloaded world there are always too many tasks to get everything done. You need to choose which tasks are the most important and will get you the outcome You want.

When you have made these decisions you can tell your boss what you will get done and what won't get done (at least in the short term).

Laugh out Loud
Skinny-Dipping with and Alligator

An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nicely: picnic tables, horseshoe courts, a volleyball court, and some apple and peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond and look it over, as he hadn't been there in a while. He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.

As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked."

Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."
